Sumatran Mandheling coffee is known for its heavy, almost syrupy body and its low acidity. By “acidity” we of course always mean that dry bright sensation that a really high-quality coffee leaves in the mouth. Nothing to do with pH levels! This combination makes for a smooth, velvety, yet strong cup of coffee. Moreover it has a powerful, nutty aroma. All in all, a most memorable cup.
Like any coffee Mandheling gives different taste characteristics depending upon the roast. With a medium roast it is sweeter and nuttier in flavour with a little less mouthfeel. At a darker roast the mouthfeel intensifies and reveals the earthy character of the coffee. As the coffee roasts longer and the beans caramelise so it adds lovely bittersweet characteristics to the body of the coffee. Just add a note to your order to specify which roast you prefer.

Our Mandheling Organic fair trade coffee comes from the great coffee paradise of Sumatra. This is the largest island of Indonesia. It is more than three times the size of Java. Of course, both islands grow magnificent coffees. This is due to a happy combination of many factors. The most important ones being the climate and the rich, volcanic ash soil, ideal for growing coffee trees.
The Giling Basah method of drying coffee beans is unique to Sumatra. The farmers hull the parchment off the beans at up to 50% moisture content (compared to 10/12% moisture usually). As a result, this Mandheling has a very full body with a concentrated flavour, garnished with herbal flavours and a spicy finish. It also has Sumatra’s trademark flavour profile of low acidity, richness that lingers on the back of the palate, and a chocolate finish. Giling Basah also gives the raw Mandheling beans their signature dark colour.
Mandheling is a high-quality, organic coffee. The coffee pickers triple pick the beans i.e. they sort through them three times. As a result only the best beans make it into your cup.
