Hand Roasted Coffee

What is hand-roasted coffee?

When we say that we hand-roast our coffee we mean that we manually control the whole roasting process. We do not use any software but instead our experienced roasters take the raw coffee beans, in small batches, and roast them carefully in our venerable old roasting machines. This method allows us to carefully monitor the beans’ colour, aroma and temperature, resulting in a unique flavour profile. Hand-roasting coffee beans is a craft that in our opinion requires skill, patience and a deep understanding of coffee. The results can vary every time but we believe it usually means a more nuanced and complex cup of coffee compared to mass-produced, machine-roasted beans.

Why you should try hand-roasted coffee?

  • Enhanced Flavour: Our freshly roasted coffee beans have a more vibrant and complex flavour profile than pre-packaged or stale coffee. Our careful hand-roasting process brings out the natural oils and flavours in the beans, resulting in a richer taste for you.
  • Aroma: The smell of freshly roasted coffee is unmatched. It’s just gorgeous. The scent of freshly ground and brewed coffee wafting round the house is wonderful and adds to your overall coffee-drinking experience.
  • Nutritional: Freshly-roasted coffee retains more of its natural antioxidants and nutrients, that’s beneficial for your health.
  • Customised coffee: When you buy freshly roasted coffee, you can usually tell us the roast level (light, medium, or dark) that suits your taste preferences. This level of customization allows you to enjoy the coffee the way you like it. For example our new Ugandan Nyabirongo beans (link) have divided opinions, with most customers liking them lightly-roasted but a few people preferring a darker, fruitier roast instead.
